I've been asked to setup a server with Document Management System (DMS) and Contact Management System (CMS) at the time being. This server could be expanded to be a Email Server and Printing Server as well.

Decision is mine for using whatever software. As I prefer the LAMP model for legibility issues, reliabilty and cutting costs. Here's the list of software to be used to configure this server:
  1. Operating System: Ubuntu 7.04 Server Edition
  2. Database: MySQL 5.0.38
  3. PHP5
  4. Web Server: Apache2
  5. DMS: Alfresco
  6. CMS: SugarCRM or Liferay
Other required features:
  1. SSH: using OpenSSH
  2. DNS: using Bind 9
  3. Java: JDK 1.5
  4. Apache Tomcat 6
  5. Samba
  6. FTP
  7. MTA: Postfix
Optional features:
  1. Printer Server: CUPS
  2. Email Server: SquirrelMail
As it's my first experience to setup such kind of server with such big list of services, I'll try to document this experience as much as I can. Follow me up while documenting this experience.

Neither SugarCRM or Liferay

Neither SugarCRM or Liferay are Content Management Systems.

SugarCRM is a Customer Relationship Management System (CRM).

Liferay is a portal.

Alfresco is a Content Management system (which can be optionally deployed to Liferay).

Tomcat 6 has not been certified for use with Alfresco (yet).

The Alfresco repository is accessible via FTP so your FTP service may clash with it unless you reconfigure port numbers.

Thanks for your comments, anon!!!

Did I mention a Content Management System? I mentioned Contact Management System, which is a part of CRM application.

I just got to know Liferay few days ago and find that it has good modules that could help the NGO in managing their Contacts, Events, ... I didn't examine Liferay very well but as I read that it could work perfectly with Alfresco, it has to be tested.

Thanks for the information about Tomcat 6, will use the certified one.

The FTP service is meant to be the Alfresco one and I don't need others. May be I should remove from the above list.

My bad - I saw CMS and immediately thought of Content Management System. Good luck with your project. I look forward to reading about it.
